The most important things are as below.
# The hosting company must control their servers.
# Don't let your hosting company own your domain.
# Avoid Free Hosting Of Any Kind.
# Seek a Host With Good Support.

Four very simple points you make there. And I agree with all of them. First of all, NEVER let your host own your domain. You should always register it under your information even if it is free like for me. I have a VPS with my host and it comes with a free domain. I registered the domain under my contact information. My host does also require you to register it under your name so there shouldn't be any conflicts.

You should not give a chance for hosting company to own your site and they need to maintain your site continuously.

That's a good technique to never let your own hosting company own your Domain name. Great! I will say in order to choose the right hosting company for you, you will need to first of all know which way or which tool you are going to use for building your website.

Are you using Wordpress? Joomla? Boonex? Basic HTML & CSS?

So it all depends the way you build your site to choose a good company for you.

It's especially important to be sure of your domain ownership with hosting offers that include a free domain. Before signing up for any offers like that make sure that you get to keep the domain name if you cancel your hosting account. I always recommend getting your domain from one company and your hosting from a different one.

The best way to avoid mistakes is to get an unmanaged dedicated server or VPS.

It is very difficult to move a complex site without having root access, but I had to do it. Although I lost many days and it was very painful, the migration even wasn't perfect. Now I own a VPS (and root access to it) and my life is much better. If you are really on a budget and can't afford a VPS, go for reputable company.

If you do not have root access, you can always use some kind of mirroring tool like Teleport Pro to get a full copy of your website, then upload it via FTP to a new host. But anyway, having root access is much better in most cases.

Agreed about avoiding free hosting. Paid hosting in my experience with my provider has been very good. I love how you get great uptime and quality space and bandwidth for the price you pay which is less than lunch!

Also consider that sites are full of marketing gimmicks like unlimited webspace, which is though limited by other server resources or lifetime free domains which usually belong to the host, and you are able to use it as long as you are hosted with the certain provider.
