It used to be that hosting didn't come cheap a couple years ago but now it is dirt cheap. I've seen many hosts like the one I use who are giving shared hosting packages for real cheap and from my experience, be very reliable. Throw in a domain and they've gone full circle from the expensive days to budget ways I think.

I bet you the very same is going to happen to Resellers, VPS, and Dedicated servers in the near future.

I can quite certainly say from my own experiences and experiences of many other who have tried big budget hosts -you get what you pay for. A big company cannot offer personal friendly support.

We have cheap (but definately not the cheapest) prices and have to rally around the fact that it's personal, small and friendly.

In the end, you get what you pay for to some extent.

The best advice I can give when it comes to hosting is look around and more importantly READ REVIEWS. They are your friends. But be weary of fake reviews (they're not your friends)

Very much agreed. There are a lot of hosts out there charging $50 for shared hosting and marketing themselves as "cheap" or "budget" hosts. When I had shared hosting with my current host it was $2 a month and that is literally what I call budget or cheap. I wouldn't pay higher than $5 for cheap hosting.

Yes, it is best to start with shared budget hosting and afterward if traffic increases significantly look for more expensive options.

Exactly. It is not worth it to spend big bucks on a VPS (even though they are cheap now) when you don't know if the site will catch fire yet. Budget plans are great to start with. I always tell friends who want to make web sites to get shared plans.

Not really necessary as many budget hosts will allow unmetered resources. At least my current one offered that when I started with them. Shared hosting won't be blazing fast but it is all you can use.

I would rather prefer to keep my current plan where I get a free domain for buying hosting than switch over to another host who only offers subdomains.
I don't see the reasoning that supports subdomains at all.

I know what your saying that's exactly what we do if you pay for a hosting plan you get your domain name registered for free for an entire year, and what I was saying about subdomain hosting it's a great way to test the web hosting company server and options they offer without paying anything.

A lot of people do the subdomain if they are trying to see if a script they want to install is support by the hosting company, or if it's reliable, etc... Some people actually don't want the hassle of having their own dot com to have to renew it yearly or two years, etc... so they just go with the subdomain which allows them to signup pick a name and not worry about it anymore.

I don't see the point of not having a domain. A domain is simpler to memorize and makes your site much more legitimate. And as I said before, there is no renewal as long as you have hosting so in my case, as long as I have hosting, my provider will renew my domain for me automatically.
