Most of the times hacking attempts are successful because of the poor code of your website. Hackers usually looks for a security hole as well, if your scripts and softwares are not up-to-date with latest updates and patches definitely your site is going to be hacked by the hackers. Hence, make sure to keep your scripts and softwares up-to-date as well as install a good antivirus software to keep your data safe from malicious scripts.

This should be your host's responsibility to keep you safe. I know my current host always updates to the latest software to prevent loopholes and security lapses.
