dedicated server and webhosting question

hello

I am wanting to have streaming videos on my website. I would estimate anywhere from 20-30 videos at about 3-10 minutes long each on my website. My goal, obviously, is to have this be a popular website with many people watching the videos at once. Not being very knowledgable about this yet, would a dedicated server be the way to go? If not that, what would be the a better alternative. I also was looking at web hosting, not sure if that's the way I should go since I don't know much about putting videos on the web. One of my ideas was putting one new video on the website a week. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Or if anyone could steer me toward a resource that I should read or check out would be awesome. Thanks as always.

Hi,

You do NOT need a dedicated server for streaming videos. What I would do is rent space from amazon. They charge very little and you just pay for the amount you use.

Or place your videos on youtube for free.

If you anticipate steady growth in viewers you will eventually need a dedicated server, but it would be a bit of an overkill for a brand new project with zero audience. A scalable managed VPS would be a better choice.

Since, video streaming websites are resource intensive sites and requires 24/7 availability IMO, you should opt for a dedicated server solution. It offers high performance, greater scalability, root access to the server and most importantly 100% uptime guarantee.

Dedicated servers usually required when the visitor numbers are too high or the script requires extra resource.For video streaming it's not necessary

Firstly, you need to check the terms of service you see if you are allowed you upload such content. Also, is the material copyrighted? A lot of hosts won't have an issue with these things but some hosts are very strict on the issue so you must find the right host who will allow you to do the activities you are suggesting.

I would totally recommend a VPS to start then a dedicated server only when your visitors numbers have saturated.

The term "pay for the amount you use" is basically used in the cloud hosting solutions. And everyone knows that Amazon offers cloud hosting solutions and a few months back the Amazon EC2 cloud were down which affected the performance of Reddit, Foursquare and Quora. So, I don't think it would a great idea to opt for the Amazon service.
