Default 1and1 hosting? Anyone ever use it?

Has anyone ever used 1and1 hosting in the us? I just made a site for a client, went to publish it and it didn't work, Called CS and they said I can either use frontpage or have ftp access but not both. Meaning I can now only publish through frontpage, but I was supposed to add on worpress to the site and I don't think that possible to publish through frontpage? I've never heard of losing ftp access just because you enable frontpage ext. I have a new love for my server now LOL

That host is renowned for being one of the worst hosts in the industry. Avoid at all costs, including registering domains with them.

Yeah, this is the guys first site ever too that I made for him, so I felt bad that he got suckered already but luckily he took our advice and changed to hostgator so now I just hope he gets his money back from 1and1! We'll see though. I keep telling him to sign up here to help him learn more about running an online business but I don't see him here yet. I'll keep pushing him though :-)

Yes, 1&1 is garbage! I still register domains through them but their hosting complete and utter garbage. Support takes 2 or 3 days to respond to an email and nothing is ever solved in less than 3 emails.

I just canceled my latest hosting account with them because they capped my bandwidth. I had near 1 TB of bandwidth per month and was hosting a big package (700 MB) of vBulletin arcade games. I was no where near my quota, yet they still capped me to less than 100k/sec. When I contacted support they blamed my ISP. I had 3 other people try it from different parts of the country, all had the same speed.

I'm now back with dreamhost, they serve pages a little slow but have had pretty decent uptime since I'm back. *crosses fingers*

Their CS was baffled at why I would want to add a blog on the website. Drives me crazy when they don't even know how to support their own product. Luckily my first and last experience with them is over! I may now require no 1and1 hosting for my clients LOL

I totally agree, but they told me I could either publish through frontpage or ftp, not both so therefore I had no idea how to publish a script through FP, its not possible in my eyes, atleast not a way I've ever done it. Don't know how you could possibly chmod in frontpage. Hostgator is up and going now though, about to take his site live finally and put the whole thing behind me!

DANGER, HORROR, STAY AWAY....from 1and1 at all costs!

    Never hosts with them
Never register a DN with them
If you have a DN reg'd with them...be ready for months of hassle and red tape to get it transfered away and make sure you complete every bullshit, purposely hidden form and then still expect it to be a nightmare
Never use any of their other bullshit services

    else

You will forever regret even looking at their website and quite possibly they may try to charge you just for doing that! I shit you not.

Don't take my word for it...go look at the BBB report for 1and1 on the PA BBB site...when I was last there filing yet another complaint against them sometime last year...there were several hundred complaints. Also check the ICANN reporting site....shit loads of complaints there as well. I can't believe ICANN allows 1and1 to maintain a Registrar status.

Utterly pathethic, mismanaged, and TOTALLY crooked so called business.
Ask me how I really feel about them and I will tell you.

I have a client that has space there, but so far I haven't had any problems so far. They just seem expensive to me in the end.

More "bad experiences" than I care to fess up to. Not by my own choice I might add. Every experience I have had with them has been from buying a website or domain name from a person whom already had it registered there. Trying to get it switched to another registrar is as close to impossible as it can get. They make it so difficult, they lie, then lie some more, then make you wait the full 5-7 days (which I might add is the limit) to release the domain after it has been accepted at the other registrar.

I still have one site left there (registered). I just haven't had the time or patients to go down the long road and never ending hell one has to go through to get it transfered away. I refuse to buy a DN or site from anyone now if I know beforehand it is registered there.

HostGator is not as good as people think by the way.
They have a habit of just closing sites down without your permission. They also have a very small limit on the amount of mysql querys so large sites hosted on their shared servers are out of the question.

I never used them, but from what i know they are 'ok' for small sites. Any big site IMO should be hosted on it's own server anyways

Not necessarily, because I could have a large resource intensive website that doesn't get many visitors. I think in that case it would be an overkill to get a dedi for it. It would be far more efficient to fix the script.

Better put, a large and active website shouldn't be on a shared server. A large site with little to no traffic, different story.

For a year I have used hostgator and have had no problems, until they switched from PHP_MOD to PHPSuEXEC, but that has been resolved. I run pretty intense scripts and SQL's with no problem. When the site hits critical mass I will then switch to a dedi, but even with heavy traffic I have had zero issues.

I think we have all had bad experiences, but never have we ran into a hosting company that will disallow FTP access on a site like 1 and 1.

Not even if it's not resource intensive. A dedi will give you more up time, in most cases better security, better load times, you do not have to worry about others straining the server, causing outages, slowness, etc.

There is more to it than just 'what your site' uses. If a site gets enough traffic and makes enough profit a dedi is the best route. I'm not saying run only one site on the dedicated, if you have multiple sites you can run those on it as well. Or split them up like I do, my sites are split up on 3 dedicated servers.

My up time is so much better, my load speeds are better, I make back the extra costs in increased sales

Yet this host continues to sucker unsuspecting people with their multiple page advertising in major media like Computer Shopper magazine (not to mention they pay their affiliates well to shill for them too!). They get alot of new domainers because they normally offer free domains with their hosting packages. I had over 100 domains with them at one point myself, had some problems with them double charging me for domains and trying to cancel a domain with them can be pure h#ll... Google "1&1 Sucks"

they limited you on your mysql usage, it does not go the same with all the disk space you get. That is the worst ever. It is 100mb for mysql database and like a gig for space. Want can't I use all my space for the mysql database!!!

I purchased my domain name through them, but have not used their hosting service at all.

I had no problems pointing the domain name to my webhost, but its still a pretty new site, so we shall see...

I agree with WildWeb. - stay away from 1&1.. to complicated and too big to provide support when you need it.
