Thread: Portfolio Re-Design

I have been working on it for the past week on and off, just put it on the main site now.

NDE Designs Portfolio - Nicholas Edwards

All thats left to do is add some items to the portfolio and add paging to the portfolio part of the site.
I might change the background on the design too, not sure if I like it or not.
I might make a separate page for each of the items in the portfolio too, any opinions on if this is a good or bad idea? It'd allow me to show the larger previews of the sites/designs, which would probably be the only plus.

Any ideas/constructive critisism would be great

TS, I looked through your portfolio site and I can't think of anything critical to say about it. The colors and the whole layout looks great.

The only thing I would suggest is that you make the external links open in a new window and make yourself a privacy policy - maybe that could be on the contact page.

Oh yeah, forgot about that big space on the contact page, really should fill it with something (possibly a privacy policy - thanks).

I'd rather not open links in an external window though, it'd make the site not validate for a start. Accessibility and web standards say that it's best to allow the user to choose if they wish to open links in new windows/tabs or not (by middle clicking, or right clicking and selecting to open in a new window/tab). I do try to follow the standards, so probably best if I don't do that.

ps what kind of thing should I put in a privacy policy for a portfolio?

The needs of a privacy policy depend upon the website.

In your case all you really need is some sort of message letting people know that any information submitted via the contact form will not be shared with third parties. So it doesnt have to be very long.

I Like the background if this is up for a vote.

As for a separate page for each of the items in the portfolio my thought would be no unless you plan on more text. Plus I like how you click the link right to the website.

I would add more to the Testimonials page. We here know who CB is but, some of your traffic might not with no working link for conformation it looks maybe made up.
In other words I think contact information on the Testimonials page is really important a link their would be great.

Yeah, I agree with the testimonials thing, but I understand that some people either don't want their link up there (or any contact info up there), or don't have a link to put there, so i've got it set so that there can be a link if it's provided.

I think I won't put extra pages in for each project. It was more for design projects (so I could show the full image on the page, instead of the smaller preview that i've got on there atm), but I think i'll just end up linking to the full image for design projects (as most of them won't have a link to put there anyway).

As for the background i'm up for suggestions...I have a 2nd one that I made and might use, but i'm not sure if I like it better or not:

WOW!!!! That I really don't understand. Why whould someone not want a free backlink that you could place deep to show off your work is beyond me.....

More that they don't want to be contacted by people asking about me. I don't know, I just have it set that way. Anyway, I have the ability to add a link in if the person who gives me feedback provides one.

The site has nice color theme. I like the favicon as well. May be you should do unique titles and descriptions for all your pages. On-page optimization, I guess you would do it once you have stabilized your design but the sooner the better

Really? It's a portfolio, I don't think it needs to be optimized that much for SE's. It's more just something to show potential clients/employers (who will be given a link).

Think I might change the favicon too, that one annoys me - it was related to an old portfolio layout I had.
