I do the webmaster thing to make some extra money sometimes.
My regular job is working for myself, setting up and supporting computer networks, servers and workstations. That keeps me out of the house half the time.

I market through affiliate programs, and PPC programs for random(ish) topics. Oh yeah. And I blog.
Not bad.

I design websites. If business is slow, I find a land job or work on a cruise ship.

Our main business was a shop selling PDA accessories. We keep our stock and has shipped more than 40000 orders. However, this was not aa true home business as we used a whole appartment to run it. As of today, that business is closed because people no longer buy PDAs: they buy Smartphones instead. We are left with $7000 in unsold inventory that we will probably have to write off.
Anyway, the work is so tough that I glad to see the end of it. Our income now comes completely from webpublishing and is passive.
Grim. I wonder if you used dropshippers or did you keep stock?

You've probably done all this, but just in case you haven't....
1. Get all your wedding cakes on your website in their own section/page.
2. Get a bunch of business cards and start handing them out. If you have any bridal shows in your area, that's a great place to do it.
3. Get AdWords up and running for your website.
4. People will see your work at weddings and word of mouth will begin to kick in after a while.
It should also be noted that it's true, there's good money to be made in wedding cakes. There's also good money to be made in birthday / anniversary / baptism cakes.
People can go to the local grocery store and get a birthday cake for $20. But, then again, it's not going to be anywhere near as nice as a cake that you make. There's a certain percentage of the population that will never understand this. That's fine. The $20 cake in the grocery store is for them. There's also a percentage of people who understand that some birthday cakes are worth $100 or more and they are not afraid to pay it if they know they are going to get a good product. So, long story short... Don't feel like you have to price match that cake in the grocery store.
You're selling a completely different item.![]()

Yeah I am bad about selling them for cheaper than they should be... I guess I want them to think oh I can get and incredible cake for a good price and then they will come back but I see what your saying! I did one that I actually sold for a good bit and she really loved it and was willing to pay the $ for it and came back this year wanting me to do her daughters birthday cake again... here was the first one I did for her ...

It was a mad hatter type and she had here own cake topper but I added the little lamb just for my pic...

My wife and I have the same discussions.
You'll find, over time, that you will build up a client base of repeat customers, even at $100 or more per cake. My wife has people that she's done the birthday cake for 4 years straight now.
Nice cake, twinkletoes. :P
You do nice work, so don't worry about the $20 cake people. They aren't for you.![]()

I've tried those ad programs (AdSense etc..)
They confuse me, I'm pretty new to all of this though.
I'm starting to get into web design though.
My boyfriend makes decent money off of it.
Part time PHP developer(hired by companies directly on-demand) :stongue:
Got like 20 companies on my resume by now i think, started just after i got 17, and got myself a Zend Certification(quite a lot of demand for those i noticed, specially around Norway)

I'm a contractor. I'm trying to specialize in building back yard structures (sheds, decks, gazebos, percocet, vicoden, etc..) Problem is that I have spread myself out so far that I continue to get calls on an everyday basis to fix toilets, install a new water heater, paint, blah, blah....I also make an incredible living on adsense (more than $40 per month in most cases, ask me how). I did take a year off from working to jump into webmastering. The most I made off of that was about $1000 in a month...That's hardly enough to feed my 4 boys, let alone pay rent, bills, and feed me and mom...That's why webmastering has turned into a hobby, there isn't a living in it for me right now. Although, I knew nothing about internet technologies when I began, I didn't even know what HTML was in June of 2006, so I did okay....
I am working as a writer. All my customers own domains and all of my
customers can't write, so it is my job to do this. Some of them also
have a blog without having the time to blog, so it's also my job to do
this.
Ahoi!

You'll have to visit my site, read the 142 page agreement, sign in 8 places, initial on pages 31, 44, 85, 96, and 113. I'll need you to pull a credit report on all three bureaus, a criminal background check on yourself(including fingerprinting), and your neighbors on both sides and across from you. Then, once you have completed that, I can install one for you for $5.00...

A toilet is a 3 page contract, no signature needed, just a right big toe print....The average toilet install takes approximately 3 days, and no access to any bathroom in the neighborhood is allowed. $5.00 for that.

alrighty then...it's a pretty new toilet...fresh on the market so i'll have to send you over a NDA before you can begin installing it...do you take checks?
lol

The landlord has known my toilet is leaking all over the floor for 3 months now and hasn't done a thing, the part for it sits on the back of my toilet from when he bought it 3 months ago, my door is still busted too, so glad I am getting out of here, they obviously don't give a crap about us.
