Tiger Kills visitor at San Francisco Zoo

Investigators probe killer tiger's escape at zoo - CNN.com

A tiger somehow managed to get out of it's enclosure at the zoo, went into a cafe and killed one person before injuring two others.

Police shot and killed it at the scene.

What are your opinions on some of the things that happened here?

Just a few questions, how'd it get out? Who's fault is it? Think they family of the deceased will sue or get anything from the zoo? Do you think closing the zoo for only one day is good enough? (the zoo's website says it should open again tomorrow). Think they were right to kill the Tiger rather than try to put it to sleep?

It seems that not much visitor are around that time since it's almost closing time when the tiger managed to escaped from it's cage.

I have no clue...but I would think it would be...the way i see it...they had to kill them so they wouldn't kill anyone else...tranqs might not have worked.

well it says the Tiger attacked a cop, thats when the cops shot it.
as to opening the next day? not untill you find out how it got out and fix it. the other 3 tigers have seen it get out, do you think they are just going to sit there and not try to follow her?

ya, i don't agree with them opening the next day (they might not, i just noticed it said that on the website)...but I never thought about the fact of the other tigers trying to get out...

or why they didn't try right after she did...

This is a wild animal, if it gets loose, it's natural instinct is to attack/kill. No it shouldn't have been killed, the idiots could have easily tranquilized it. Humans are obviously a lot more intelligent than an animal.

And I bet ya it's human error that left it so he could get out of his enclosure.... and the poor thing dies for it, for being an animal.... bad enough they trapped him in a friggen zoo to begin with.

As for the family suing the zoo, I can understand suing for negligence... but this doesn't bring their loved ones back....

To me the tiger is the victim here, through and through, it's a wild animal, what the hell do you expect? This is human failure at it's best...

Tigers immune systems work just like a humans...different weights and sizes react differently to drugs...they could have drugged it and it could have fallen straight down, or it could have taken 10 minutes to take effect...they had to make a choice of killing an animal, or possibly endangering dozens of lives...i think they made the right one.

I don't think drugging it was top of their agenda - I believe it was stood over one of the victims when it was shot so time was of the essence.

Of course it wasn't the top of their agenda, cause most humans think they're superior to an animal. They should be prepared for this, a tranquilizer would make him/her disoriented, giving time to clear out the area while subduing the animal THEY decided was ok to lock up in the first place.

Get rid of zoo's, put animals back in the wild.

the only flaw with your reasoning is that a tranquilizer [SHOULD] make him/her disoriented...not WOULD...

if you child was in that cafe, and there was a chance the tranquilizer would take 15 seconds to take effect (which is plenty of time for it to kill 2-3 people in there), would you still want them to take the time to find a tranq?

you also have to remember, cops have a gun on their side, able to be used in less than 2 seconds...

park security doesn't carry tranq guns on their hips...

I care more about the animal than I do people. I'm not going to argue this. I do not believe an animal such as a Tiger should be locked up, now he's the villain for basically doing what he's supposed to do. Blame the people.

wasn't arguing...just making sense of the reason it was killed...

while no, i don't support the fact that wild animals should be captured, and I'm not saying the Tiger was the bad guy at all...yes, it was human error that caused the incident...but nevertheless, i feel that killing it was the good thing to do to save lives...

we kill dogs because they bite people...when it is probably the owners fault...the dog still dies...

I just think this situation was worse than that...as there was immediate risk to more than 1 individual...

not saying i think it's the tigers fault by any means.

wrong...the walls were not high as recommended...they were as high as required

...they never failed a safety inspection on the walls...

(though i still think the lawsuit will be interesting...based on that fact alone).

The attorney for the victims family is already shaping the case in the media. This will be more about emotion rather than reality.

I thought I heard of provocation by the victims toward the tiger? It will be interesting to see the official police report of the circumstances. The families' attorney is talking out of school so far in the media.

I remember seeing a film years back, about a guy who shared his house with tigers. No CG, he was really amongst them. Anyone help me find the name of the movie?
