    Default Bhutto Dead

Bugger. Almost as bad as getting mauled by a tiger Benazir Bhutto has been shot, then blown up for good measure, at an election rally in Rawalpindi.

Looks like people in Pakistan are stuck with Musharraf for a while longer.

Default Benazir Bhutto assasinated today :(

Pakistan lost a political dynasty today, former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, and it may cause chaotic ripples throughout the country and the entire middle east.

Not a very good situation, for Pakistan and the world.

She was the worlds first female leader of a Muslim nation and an international icon for democracy.

    A sad day today.

The fact that Pakistan has nukes pretty much guarantees that the islamic extremists will NEVER gain full control of the country and military. Try as they might. China, India (mainly India) and the US will have thousands of troops in there faster than you could possibly imagine.

    Weird reasoning.
    Iran comes to mind.

So the extremists take over Pakistan.
    They then have the nukes.

Now if they use them or threaten to use them, it would be against their main enemy, India.
    And India has nukes.
India can take a hit or two, but not Pakistan.

Yeah, Pakistan and Iran share a border, yet Pakistan ain't helping Iran out on the nuclear front. Pakistan has a secular government and don't favor a religious government. Even when the military declares rule in that nation it is often done so as to retain strong control and keep the religious extremists at bay. As much as Mushareef is/was a military dictator, and each time it swings back and forth between military rule and democratic rule, they keep the islamic extremists away from gaining too much power.

This is why it seems the US supports military dictators in that country, as much as they would also like to see democracy, providing it elects a moderate or liberal governement. They can count on the Pakistan military to keep control of its nuclear arsenal.

" She was the only leader without corruption "

Sadly this is probably not true. Her husband was known as Mr. 10 per cent and had been in jail. Both Benazir and her husband were under investigation in Switzerland and the UK for money laundering that involved millions of dollars. Switzerland actually asked Pakistan to indict her.

Whether she was involved unwittingly or not we will not know. Unfortunately like many symbols of democracy in Asia such as Kim Dae Jung and Chen Shiu Bian, their terms in office would forever be blighted by the corrupt actions of their family members.

Still it is a very sad day for Paikstan. I hope it will not degerate in chaos and civil war. I do not believe any country, whether China, Inda, or the US will have the guts to go in. The result would at least 10 times worse than Iraq. The stockmarket falls around the world in response to the assasination underscores how serious this is for the rest of the world.

If the Taliban got the control of Nuke (chances there) , then anything can happen.
Their first aim will be US and India. That may lead to a war.

They would certainly go in, but not to try to control the whole country and re-stabilize it. Only to secure the nuclear inventory then leave the rest of Pakistan to fend for itself.

That WOULD lead to war...there is no might about it...

Threat of nukes is what keeps the arab countries at bay from again attacking Israel.
For they all know, when push comes to shove, they will get nuked.
For this, it is been said is why iran wants nukes and is building their own.

Now for pakistan....let us never find out what will happen if the extremists get the nukes!
Like I said, India will surely nuke them and destroy them, as no love lost between the two countries.
And China? Given a chance they would love to suck up another country.

You are making an assumption that we know how many nukes there are, where they are kept, and that they would be easy to get at. I somehow doubt it given the record of intelligence services in Iraq. The alternative would be mount a full-scale invasion and occupation of Pakistan which would be at least 10 times more difficult than Iraq. Whoever does it would have to risk least 1 million troops, take tens of thousands in causalties, and the risk of bankrupting their economy.

Surely, you can apply the same arguments to N. Korea. It is known to have nukes, have a parnoid and unstable dictator, and is every bit as much ant-American. Not only that, it is a true terrorist state. It has blown up an airliner, executed a bomb attack against the S. Korean governnent, and kidnapped Japanese nationals from Japan itself.

Im sure the US has direct info on that. Pakistan military and US govt are pretty friendly with each other. Mushy and Bushy are pals, sort of.

High ranking military insiders (those that do not support an extremist non secular state) would gladly hand over info and the keys to the nukes to the US. Should it come to that.

Both China and India have a military of the size needed for such a task. But don't expect them to team up. India and China are enemies, technically.

But it wont require thousands of ground troops. Surgical strikes to take out nuke facilities. Like Israel did years ago against Iraq.

we are all, of course, just taking wild guesses here. Like any of us know shit!

I'm sure US intelligence is quite good on those matters. They know where the nukes are, the missiel silo's, the production facilities, storage facilities, etc. It was good in Iraq too. They knew all along that there were no fuckin' WMD's. That was just a line used to sell a war to the stupid public. Who of course bought it, hook, line and sinker.

That bit about we know where they are and will go for surgical strikes is probably the biggest reason North Korea and Iran will not use their nukes.

In a smaller version, it is like it was with us and Russia during the cold war.
Mutual destruction....neither side wanted to start a nuke war because of that.
