This morning, I woke up to the news that a person had been hit on the back of the head by a radio controlled helicopter and is now in a critical condition.

Since I used to be an avid aeromodeller, I was very worried that it was a friend that I knew since we were a very small circle. I and many otherw were quite disturbed today. Indeed it turned that I knew the injured person was but not that well.
A friend of mine who was at the scene of the accident told me that it was extremely gory. The person was still conscious when he was taken into an ambulance. The helicopter involved was one of the largest available at 15cc. and 4HP. The place where the accident occurred had a signpost clearly placed forbidding the flying of radio-controlled models. The whole local model industry is really scared now that this could lead to a clampdown on the hobby.
I suppose that this was almost bound to happen someday as there are too many lunatics around in the hobby. There are many who like to show up their skills by performing hair-raising aerobatics near the crowd. I used to be the only person who wore a safety helmet and everybody else laughed at me. I was also one of the very few who took out third party insurance. Recently I was thinking of restarting the hobby again but I suppose me wife will absolutely forbid now.
I hope the injured will come through this although the chances must be very slim. My advice to those with small children would be to stay away from places where people fly radio-controlled models, whether planes, gliders or helicopters.
