Talking Canada? Dangerous Place? I Kinda Like It Here

Australian government warns its citizens against travel to Canada. Too dangerous.

Among the things that strike terror into the hearts of Australian bureaucrats...

    Snow
    Ice
    Windchill

and Forest fires that can (apparently) erupt at any moment! mg:

I recall the whole SARS thing scaring people off from traveling here, I figured that's why, surprised it's cause Canada is listed as a risk for terrorism. We're all going to die one way or another anyway, lol!

The forest fires erupting at anytime also had me laughing.

Actually we do, and a few thousand other beers, some of which are much better than Fosters.

I fear falling objects from the HTP turning too fast in a crowded place....knocking stuff over!

I would have thought that Australia would be more of a target for terrorism than Canada. For a start, unlike Canada, they joined Bush in the Iraq adventure. Secondly, there had already been a couple of attacks against their citizens in Bali already.

Yeah, but there's no trees there.
Not much chance of one of those pesky "surprise" forest fires. :P

They have big forest fires and brush fires there every year. And when they get over their head with big fires who do they call? Canada!

A number of our water bomber aircraft do duty in Australia. Including this bad boy, the Martin Mars Bomber. The worlds larget water bombers. Only 2 of them left. Both in Canada.

At the end of fire season here in BC the California fire season begins kicking into gear. Lots of Canadian fire fighters and water bombers end up seeing action during fires like they had this past fall.

The during the winter here its fire season down in Australia. Our bombers see action there every few years when they have a bad fire season down under.

I used to fight forest fires here in British Columbia and have see the Martin Mars in action. As well as lots of other smaller bombers. Nearly got painted once when too close to a drop of fire retardant from a DC-10. And have gotten drenched when a helicopter droped its bucket on me instead of the hot spot I was trying to guide it to, sorta like this.

Oh, i miss my forest fire days. :scry:

Wow Axe, that was very interesting, thanks for sharing, I feel better already! They call us yet warn their citizens about traveling here for something we can control and they themselves cannot. mg:

Don't care what they say. I heard great things about Canada and my family and I are working very hard so we can move there in the near future. A friend of mine recently went there to live (BC) and she is in love with the place and its people.

I think you'll be very happy here. BC is absolutely beautiful. I have a ton of pictures from last summer, it was breathtaking there, the people, yep, they were very nice, a lot friendly than here in Ontario.

The Polacks in Maine have been eyeing Nova Scotia for decades!

Wait though, until fire season in Australia.
THen the entire Canadian AF will be on the other side of the Pacific Ocean.

    Invade Canada! LoL

Our water bomber fleets are not part of the military. Each province has its own section of the Ministry of Forests for fire protection and their own aircraft plus contract out for planes and helicopters as needed.

The Martin Mars aircraft were US military aircraft (Navy) built just before the end of WWII intended for long range bombing but ended up converted to do long range heavy lifting and transport. There were only 4 put into production. After the war was over they were bought by a Canadian lumber company and converted back into bombers. Except now the bomb payload was water. 7,200 US gallons per drop.

It takes only 25 seconds to reload with water as it skims across the surface of a lake to pick it up.

One went down and all crew lost while working a fire in 1961. Another was destroyed by a hurricane in 1962. Smashed up onto shore while docked.

Today the 2 remaining Mars are held by a private company and contract their services to whoever needs it. The BC government has a standing contract so that at least 1 remains in BC during fire season. And the other goes around Canada and North Western US as needed.

California rents a couple smaller water bombers from Quebec each year for a few months during the Cali fire season.

RJ: Ok, what we're goin' for is a vicious, man-eating, rabid squirrel. Can you handle that?
Hammy the Squirrel: Umm, excuse me!
    [Raises hand]
    RJ: Yes, Hammy?
Hammy the Squirrel: Rabbits aren't vicious. They're all cute and cuddly, so...
    RJ: *Rabid*, not rabbit.
    Hammy the Squirrel: Oh! Huh?
