Thread: NY's tax on cigarettes goes up Tuesday

The tax on cigarettes here in New York is going to nearly double starting Tuesday.

The state's tax on a pack will jump from $1.50 to $2.75, making New York's cigarette tax the highest in the nation.

A pack of cigarettes will now cost more than $6.

You obviously missed the point.

The government pays for the health care which equates to them needing to bring in more funds, even more reason to tax cigarettes 'of whom they will pay for the health care of the smokers' it is even more in the governments interest to keep their citizens healthy.

I've heard it's pretty damn good health care. I pay for everything out of my pocket and still wait forever and have shit ass care.

Your in the US. How would you know how fast or good the Canadian health care is?

If you broke your foot you would be in there having it looked at right away. And how can you state anything about the quality of our healthcare?

Our health care here in Canada is not free.
I may not have to worry about getting a bill for $5000 from the hospital when my wife gives birth, but the doctors that make it happen aren't working for nothing.
We all share the cost in other ways, as has been pointed out.

Britain's healthcare system works the same way. We may not have to get private insurance, or worry about getting a big bill through the door, but we still all contribute.

Still I quit smoking months ago now and I am just at the end of my 12 week course. I feel it is the best thing I have ever done, that is why I tell people to quit all the time

Apart from the obvious health issues the constant price increases were also a factor in my decision to quit i started to resent buying them all the time especially when you consider the annual cost.

Alas if it exists they will tax it.

Definitely -- I am glad I quit, it was one of the hardest things to stick to though seeming as a lot of the people I know still smoke.

If I buy smuggled ones, they cost 1.25. Smuggled from the US, Switzerland or south-east Asia. They tend to be a bit stale though...

When I used to smoke even from the 'fag house' we used to pay around £3.50. I wasn't a big fan though, all of mine used to be shop bought.

I used to smoke now I tend to stay away from 'em..
