Thread: Is Smoking Marijuana NORML In The US? Study Says Yes!

I wonder if the US should change the slogan "melting pot of the world" to "smoking pot of the world"? This Time magazine article reports pot smoking as the American pastime:

Researchers found that 42% of people surveyed in the United States had tried marijuana at least once, and 16% had tried cocaine. About 20% of residents surveyed in the Netherlands, by contrast, reported having tried pot; in Asian countries, such as Japan and China, marijuana use was virtually "non-existent," the study found. New Zealand was the only other country to claim roughly the same percentage of pot smokers as the U.S., but no other nation came close to the proportion of Americans who reported trying cocaine.

Actually it is 'banned' however it is 'good' and SHOULD NOT be banned.

Not as bad as cigarettes.

Or alcohol. Tho if yer already predisposed towards depression, anxiety, or paranoia, smoking marijuana can exacerbate the situation. It's not for everyone.

In my opinion, the only reason, marijuana is not legal in the states, is that it is not a product, made by a company. If somebody had the rights to it, and put enough lobbying dollars behind it, marijuana could have gotten thru congress, years ago.

For crying out loud, the plant has many proven medical benefits!

I say, legalize it, make it a cash crop, regulate it, tax it, and sell it!!!

This would create plenty of jobs, (there would have to be pot growing facilities, and pot selling stores, and engineers and biologists keeping the quality good.) The tax income would be outstanding, I could almost venture that it could possibly help the US out of the economy/financial crap house we are in now!

The way I look at it: A Guy smokes some weed, he sits on his couch and munches on Cheeto's. A Guy drinks a few stiff ones, goes out driving and kills someone! (and by the way, if the stoned guy goes out driving, he will probably be going 20, so it will be just like being stuck behind an old person!! LOL)

Thats the way I see it, at least right now!

On July 2nd, my province enacted a new law, granting police more powers with regards to those who drive while under the influence of weed.
Before July 2nd, there was nothing a cop could legally do if you were driving while stoned.
Now, if a cop suspects you are stoned, they can arrest you and take you to the police station for a breathalyzer, urine sample and blood sample.
The blood and urine will be analyzed for traces of alcohol and THC.

The law is (obviously) so new that nobody has challenged it yet.
But there are many who say that people will be falsely charged with driving while impaired under this new law.
It is unclear how much THC must be in the bloodstream and/or urine to be declared "impaired" or even if one can be considered impaired if under the influence of THC.
Also, THC lives on in the body long after it has been taken in.
Therefore, I may smoke a joint tonight and be caught tomorrow night with a butload of THC in my blood, long after the high has worn off.

I will be the first to admit that I should not be driving after about 4 standard drinks. My judgement is definitely impaired and reaction time is slower.
However, I have zero problems with driving while high. It doesn't impair my driving at all.

I agree, it should be legalized, slap it in a box and sold by Philip Morris or whoever, but I think there will always be underground selling of it. If you regulate pot...frankly, its not gonna be as good qualit as some of us smoking out there are used to IMHO.

Not legalizing marijuana is doing nothing but filling up our prisons with potheads who truly are not typically the ones to fear....unless you just took the last buffalo wings off the plate at the party.:smokin: :S

Same here back when I was younger that's what we used to do, smoke a little and go out driving in search of munchies. Man we used to get lost for hours or take trips like 2 hours away to an all night diner. Of course that's when gas was much more affordable. :eek:

However nowadays, maybe because I'm a bit older I don't like driving after smoking. I have driven while "under the influence" and did fine, I guess I'm more worried about getting pulled over for something stupid and spending some time in the clinker for BS.

I can think of many people off the top of my head who smoke regularly yet still get up and go to work every day, have a family, etc. I really don't think pot is all that harmful. Look at what alcohol does to families and careers; I've never heard of someone getting divorced because their husband is a stoner.

That's what twists my cajhones about all the employment drug screening crap. If I'm not operating heavy machinery or have duties where if I screw up someone can get maimed or killed, there is no reason to drug test me! It's simply an invasion of privacy. With pot it stays in your system for so long, it's just plain unfair. I could smoke a bowl tonight and not be able to get a job 3 weeks from now that any funktard could do at Wal-mart.. Is that really necessary or right?
