    Default Meteor Shower Tonight

The Perseid Meteor Shower peaks tonight. I love seeing these, and where we're visiting they have a very nice telescope to get an even better view and also a clearer sky than where I live near Toronto.

The source of the shower is Comet Swift-Tuttle. Although the comet is far away, currently located beyond the orbit of Uranus, a trail of debris from the comet stretches all the way back to Earth. Crossing the trail in August, Earth will be pelted by specks of comet dust hitting the atmosphere at 132,000 mph. At that speed, even a flimsy speck of dust makes a vivid streak of light when it disintegrates--a meteor! Because, Swift-Tuttle's meteors streak out of the constellation Perseus, they are called "Perseids."
I'm looking forward to see the Earthgrazers, mentioned below.

"Earthgrazers are long, slow and colorful; they are among the most beautiful of meteors," says Cooke. He cautions that an hour of watching may net only a few of these at most, but seeing even one can make the whole night worthwhile.
    Pictures of last years shower.

I wanted to see that but all it does is rain here this summer and it will most likely be too cloudy.

Let us know if you get to see it!

Starts around 9pm tonight, it says it peaks around 2am when it's really dark you'll see it best.

Check these various news articles, perseid meteor shower - Google News

So it says there'll be up to 60 meteors per hour, very cool

    Hey Colleen:

The article says that binoculars or telescopes are of no use, as the thinggys are moving to fast, about 37 miles per second!

I will have to go outside and see if I can spot a few!!!

Lol, dang... what was I thinking! Well it's freezing here today, plus clouded over, what an awful night. I hope it clears up a bit, the fire will help keep me warm while I'm out there if it happens to clear up. What shitty luck it clouds over here!

I may wait up til 2am to see, depends how tired I am.

We had clear skies here, but I didn't manage to spot any meteors. I wasn't constantly watching the sky though, but it doesn't matter. There are much more beautiful things I'd rather be looking at hehe.

Sorry about your awful night. Take care.

It stayed cloudy all night so ended up watching The Descent. Tonight I think it will be comedy.

I'm having pizza tonight, showered with pepperoni, lol. I was gonna have chicken, but I wore too much today when I went out and got too sweaty, so I just came back home. I think I'll wear shorts tomorrow.

How was that movie? I wish I had a movie to watch tonight. I guess I'll have to see what's on tv.

Was ok I guess, there's three more movies now, it's still cold and crappy here so our plans are going down the drain.

It's not much better here. It's been pretty cold the last few days. Sorry that things aren't going so great. What plans did you have?

Well, we're supposed to canoe down the river through a few cities, which will take anywhere from 3-7 hours. mg: Depends on the current. A little nervous about it though cause the fire department warns people not to go in cause of the strong undertow. We needed a second canoe, got it, but it keeps being cold and rainy, so now it's supposed to be tomorrow we go, but again, it's calling for crap weather. Anywho, it's the Saskatchewan River.

Saskatchewan River - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Oh, last night some crazy dude in a pickup truck went 150km off the highway, just missing the bridge, onto an embankment and airborne for quite some time then landed nose down in the river, they found a dead body in the passenger seat and the driver is missing so we now we have to contend with a possible body floating up by our canoe tomorrow or the next day, that or a crazy man in the bush.

Check out the story, edmontonsun.com - Edmonton News - Truck roars into river

I was just swimming in that the other day, imagine the horror seeing a truck coming at you through the air. mg:

Never knew Kit Kat had ice cream, sounds yummy.

Cool on the Saskatchewan River. Not cool on the crazy weather. The undertow sounds risky, but just wear your life jackets and go out and have fun when you're able. If you say no to adventure, you might as well become a nun lol.

That would be very scary. Just out of curiosity though, if it's been so cold and rainy, where'd you find the time to go swimming?

The first few days here were extremely hot, no rain. The crappy stays started on the 11th I believe. It's not crappy today but windy so going to Elk Island to see the animals. Tomorrow should be canoe day.
