Thread: Indian woman gives birth aged 70

An Indian woman has given birth to her first child at the age of 70 after receiving IVF treatment, newspapers reported her doctor as saying Monday.

Rajo Devi, who married 50 years ago, gave birth to a baby girl on November 28 after in vitro fertilisation, said Anurag Bishnoi, a doctor at the Hisar fertility centre in Haryana state.

"Rajo Devi and (her husband) Bala Ram approached the centre for treatment and the embryo transfer was done on April 19," he told the Hindustan Times. "Both the mother and child are in good health."

Bishnoi claimed Devi was the world's oldest mother.

Another 70-year-old Indian was reported to have given birth to twins via IVF in July this year, while a 66-year-old Spanish woman had twins in 2006.

Devi's husband, aged 72, had also wed his wife's sister after 10 years of his first marriage did not result in children. His second wife also failed to become pregnant.

It was not clear whose egg and sperm were used in the successful treatment.

"IVF has revolutionised the way we look at infertility," said Bishnoi.

"Infertility is no longer a social taboo or a divine curse. It can be treated scientifically."

To me this is selfish. The likelihood of this child still having a mother by the time She turns even just 15 is slim. Thoughtless and selfish I'm afraid. Apologies if you disagree but that's how I feel.

Thats a ripe old age to have kids they will have their work cut out for the first few years when you get to 70 its pipe and slippers time not teething and dirty nappies.

Yes this is unfair to child.I am disagree with this.

You may all say it is selfish, but the child will never lack love and the woman's life is now complete with a child she has longed for for so long.

I am happy for the woman for she got what she long for but a pity for the child.

This is exactly how I feel as well, glad that the woman finally got what she wanted but at the same time sadness because the child will be an orphan in a few years. There are so many woman having children that they dont want or are unable to bring them up properly and this woman has time against her.

I just hope that whoever ends up looking after her does a wonderful job.

Everything else aside like the fact that this child will likely lose her mother before she turns 16, do you not think that if women were intended to be able to give birth at 70 then this would be a natural thing? It is totally and utterly selfish. She could have even adopted. 70 is just ridiculous.

They say you are only as old as the womean you feel but i agree 70 is pushing it a bit.

Some say as old as the man you feel, but that's even worse. The man she's feeling is 72!

I agree that it is selfish.

Still, it's not as selfish as some other recent events of a similar nature. Remember that woman who had her dead ex hubby's frozen sperm thawed out to make a baby?

Imagine being born to a dead guy? That's gotta give you big time issues. Cruel to do such a thing to a child.

Look this woman tried for 50 years to have this child. She finally did it. I hope that I never have any problems having children, but IVF costs a lot of money, maybe they couldnt afford to have it until now, I dont know.

But this child is wanted and yeah the parents are really really old, but the child is truly wanted. But also there are so many parents who die young for different reasons. And this child will always know that they were 100% wanted and loved.

I think that does make a massive difference.

The phrase "Better late than never" doesn't apply here, at least not for the infant.

It all about Game of God. No one will able to understand the actual reason of birth of this Special Angel.
There is something always hidden by GOD which is get to know later. Now the point is whether it is for Good or Bad.

I think that it is scary that people can be so selfish. I think that there is a growing trend for people to travel over to places to India and stay there to get this kind of treatment.

Happy to read from the woman side because she waited long for it but i think that it is not good for the baby who that woman will take care of her infant baby.

This is an unusual incident. Usually women don't give birth after 45 or 50 year but there are some exceptional incident into the world that turmoil the society,and this is one of them. May be this women did it just from desire of motherhood.

Yes its pity for the child. Buy that child would be brought up in loving atmosphere
