Adolf Merckle, one of Germany’s wealthiest men, committed suicide after weeks of talks with creditors designed to save his businesses from being consumed by disastrous investments and the global financial crisis.

The billionaire, 74, was said by his family to have been “broken” by the sight of his business empire, which ranged from pharmaceuticals to cement, crumbling. He died on Monday evening, apparently hit by a train a few hundred metres from his home in southern Germany.

He was not only one of Germany's wealthiest man, he was one of the 100 richest man in the world. He lived a simple life, just makes you think why did he make all this fortune for if it comes to this in the end.

GM shareholders has the latest victim. They are left with 1% of the company and the shares have fallen to 80 cents.

This demostrates what happens when money become more important than you are for yourself. People, why to give so huge meaning to the paper, I cannot understand? Life if far wider than chasing profits, isn't it?

Money is what really runs the world, without it, people are homeless and all types of bad things. It is so terrible when people with money let it completely run them.

Its sad when someone commits suicide and have that question of why knowing that we'll probably never know.

There has been numerous stories like this one in the news. I think pride plays a part as well. When someone is very successful they do not plan on losing their wealth. It is strange how they would rather take their life than deal with things another way.

and sometimes they're overwhelming in a bad way, i guess.

can we deal with them, or is it to much is for each one to answer themselves.
i know that suicide isnt solution, but it was his answer, his choice.

There's a good chance the US economy may never regain the high point it once had.. I don't see how you can spend to get out of debt..

Bush never knew what hit him with the mortgage bubble. The Democrats including Barry Obama are responsible for the mortgage crisis.

You are correct. Congressman Barney Frank always bounces back. There was even a guy running a gay escort service from Barney Frank's apartment.

He wasn't able to take the failure.. Men like him are weak.. They can't handle situations such as this.. May he rest in peace and I hope the family could soon move on.. My male instructor also committed suicide by drinking pesticide because of mere rumors leaving his wife and two children, one is only 5 months old.. I really pity these people who commit suicide.. I really hope we could do something to prevent these things from happening..

I don't get it why is it that suicide is the answer to this problem regarding financial crisis when they were bankrupt or cannot go on any further to continue fighting for the business.
