As-yet-unpublished Canadian data raises concerns about whether it's a good idea to get a seasonal flu shot.

A series of studies suggests that people who got a seasonal flu shot last year are about twice as likely to catch swine flu as people who didn't.

Journals bar would-be authors from discussing their results publicly before they go through peer review, but the findings have been a poorly kept secret and many in the public health community in Canada have heard about them.

In the meantime, five biopharmaceutical companies have been awarded massive contracts by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) for development and production of more than 195 million doses of swine flu vaccine, and health officials are urging everyone to get vaccinated against both the seasonal- and the swine flu this season.

The companies -- Novartis, GlaxoSmithKline, MedImmune, Australian drug maker CSL, and Sanofi-Pasteur -- will likely make a great deal of money.

CSL has contracts to supply $180 million worth of bulk antigen to the U.S. MedImmune will supply 40 million doses of its live attenuated nasal spray swine flu vaccine for more than $450 million. Sanofi-Pasteur is providing more than 100 million doses of monovalent swine flu vaccine, a $690 million order.

swine flu knocked a bunch of us on our butts for a week this summer. it is just a flu, and going with all of the media paranoia i still went in to the doctor to get a test. what i ended up with was sitting in a waiting room for an hour, which apparently costs $140. i also got to hear a doctor berate the sweetest nurse in the entire planet for about 10 minutes on how everyone who comes in for "swine flu" is a raving lunatic and an idiot.

IMHO, all that news and researches are created by medical companies selling medicines.

Unfortunately, it's not proved so much and who knows what desease you can catch and when. But you should be on the safe side. But i agree that pharmaceutical companies will make huge money because of the swine flu.

You know I have never gotten a Flu shot and I have never gotten the Flu. I am afraid of many medications and will not take one unless I must.

This appropriateness is not occasional - people who have got seasonal flu have lower immunity than those who haven't - so they have more chances to catch swine flu.

I never get a flu shot even when I was pregnant why compromise your body's own immune system if the annual flu shot only protects against one particular strain anyway?? I mean I'm not against immunizations or anything but the flu shot I just don't feel is a very neccesary one in most cases.

i think i will survive a bit longer than those others.. coz i do not have this seasonal flu.

This seems like nonsense to me. Do you not think that it is better to wait until this research has been published until we can take it as verbatim? Also, lets see where exactly this is published before we can work out whether it is reputable or not.
