Exclamation It Would Have Been A Bargain...

Saddam Hussein offered to step down and go into exile one month before the invasion of Iraq, it was claimed last night.

Fearing defeat, Saddam was prepared to go peacefully in return for £500million ($1billion).

The extraordinary offer was revealed yesterday in a transcript of talks in February 2003 between George Bush and the then Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar at the President's Texas ranch.

Saddam asked Bush for $1bn to go into exile | the Daily Mail

Considering the lives lost and expense in HUNDREDS of billions of dollars spent pursuing the war in Iraq, one wonders, if true, why we didn't take Saddam up on his offer?

Not to back Bush up, which I am not doing. But simply kicking Saddam out, letting him leave, etc. Iraq would have been worse w/o him there, not better. I don't believe Bush believes this but it's the truth.

Saddam was a bloody butcherer, but he kept things in order. Look at the mess we have now, imagine it w/o Saddam to keep things in order and w/o the US there!

yes, that is a point. But he was responsible for that . He d'dn't allowed anyone to grow as a leader. So, lack of leadership was there (second to him). There was someone, but Saddam never considered him in decision making.

He was not responsible for how the religions are over there, those people simply do not get along. The only way to keep the peace in such an area is to either be brutal as hell or to take the backlash of trying to get them integrated. Integration is not easy, makes the minor integration that was done in the US look like a cake walk.

I'm not a Bush supporter, but paying a criminal to get your way isn't a great strategy IMO.

What I think would have been a better bargain is to stay out of the middle east completely.
