Thread: British Teacher Could Face 40 Lashes Because Of Teddy Bear

A British schoolteacher has been arrested in Sudan accused of insulting Islam's Prophet, after she allowed her pupils to name a teddy bear Muhammad.

Colleagues of Gillian Gibbons, 54, from Liverpool, said she made an "innocent mistake" by letting the six and seven-year-olds choose the name.

Ms Gibbons was arrested after several parents made complaints.

The BBC has learned the charge could lead to six months in jail, 40 lashes or a fine.

Wow, 6 months in jail seems a bit steep too.. I think I'd prefer a fine!

Surely they can't inflict their archaic rules on non natives. Jail her or fine her sure if she broke the law, but lashes? That's sick!

When I first read this story I thought it was a joke. Further investigation tells me punishments like this are commonplace. I doubt the UK will permit this kind of punishment on one of its citizens (I hope at least), but it does make me very concerned for the natives of Sudan, Saudi Arabia, Iran and the rest, just what kind of atrocities happen on a daily basis that we never get to hear about. Scary!

This story doesn't surprise me a bit. Sudan isn't know for its moderate stance.

A year or so ago, I saw pictures of an Iranian boy that, as punishment for stealing, had his arm run over by a truck. This was directed by one of their religious police officers. The sentence was carried out on a public street in front of everyone. Which is, of course, the point of such methods. Ghastly stuff.

lashes is nothing. a writer asked a question about Mo-ham and they broke into his office, kidnapped, then beheaded him.

What I love is that this occurs in the same year and on the same planet as where I live. Why do I support bombing the crap outta countries, innocents or not? Because of this.

I went to college with a chap called Mohammed, who we all called "Momo" for short.

Wonder if it's ok to call a teddybear Momo?

I support attacking all countries. We have to let them know who is in charge.

However, I am also an isolationist. Right now our country ain't doin so good. We need to clean up our homeless, welfare, healthcare, social security. Once those things are done then I say attack the next country to give us the finger.

Build up the military like WWII.
That would take care of welfare and put everyone to work.
Then attack every damn country in the world run by muslims.
Plus those run by people who could care less about us (mexico, venezuela, columbia and bolivia come to mind).
Heck, do the unthinkable.....align with china!

I know and have known a lot of people who are muslims that were nicer than some people who are christians.
