Default Life in prison for lending car?!

I just saw this on Court TV. This young man is getting life in prison for lending his car to some guy who took it to a robbery with 3 other men and murdered an 18 y/o girl who was home.

Wow, life in prison for lending a car and he didn't actually "do" anything.... something's wrong with this world. Seriously wrong. :sundecided::sangry:

He was unable to prove to the courts he didn't know about the robbery...so maybe he was lying when he said he didn't know about it?

(though either way, he shouldn't have gotten charged...last time I check the law read "beyond a reasonable doubt"...so it seems to me that they needed to prove that he DID know about it...not the he couldn't prove he didn't know about it...seems a little backwards)
    Can't Touch This
I shall call him squishy, and he shall be mine, and he shall be my squishy!...in my pants

Even if he was lying, should not matter. It's not supposed to be his responsibility to prove he did no know about the crime about to take place. It is supposed to be solely the courts responsibility to prove he was guilty.

This is old news too, happened in 2004 Ryan Holle - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Without knowing for sure i'm going to assume he is black and simply got railroaded because of the color of his skin.

He was white and sentencing was just last week, which is why it's in the news now.

Nope, he is black. Here is the NY times article with a pic http://www.nytimes.com/2007/12/04/us...eypVVerb0WayzA

And it was 2004. Happened in 2003, he was convicted in 2004.

Court TV must be affected by the screen writers strike too, and running reruns or something.

Or maybe he is finally getting some kind of an appeal so its news again. Or, now that I look at it, the NY times article is from just a couple weeks ago, and now its on Court TV, crime was 2003, already convicted back in 2004. Maybe his legal team is pumping the story in preparation for launching a suit to challenge the archaic law that put him there.

I saw several pictures of him on Court TV, he's not black nor does he look it in that picture, he must be something else.

he's not Caucasian then, perhaps mixed race. Whatever, there is something else going on for this to be getting wide coverage now. If you read the NY times one they mostly are talking about the felony murder rule and the way it is interpreted in the US, particularly florida. A few states no longer enforce it, a few have abolished it. Europe and Canada dropped it years ago.

I think someone, like I said, might be getting ready to challenge this law. So they are running the press circuit to get some awareness out there, get public to put pressure on government, courts, etc. And when they go ahead and challenge the law they have a better chance of getting it erased from the books, or seriously altered to reflect reality.

Mr. Holle, who had given the police a series of statements in which he seemed to admit knowing about the burglary, was convicted of first-degree murder. He is serving a sentence of life without the possibility of parole at the Wakulla Correctional Institution here, 20 miles southwest of Tallahassee.

thats why he got life and good riddens to him. i hope he rots in hell. that girl never had a say in what happened to her

“All he did was go say, ‘Use the car,’ ” Mr. Allen said of Mr. Holle in a pretrial deposition. “I mean, nobody really knew that girl was going to get killed. It was not in the plans to go kill somebody, you know.”

But Mr. Holle did testify that he had been told it might be necessary to “knock out” Jessica Snyder. Mr. Holle is 25 now, a tall, lean and lively man with a rueful sense of humor, alert brown eyes and an unusually deep voice. In a spare office at the prison here, he said that he had not taken the talk of a burglary seriously.

“I honestly thought they were going to get food,” he said of the men who used his car, all of whom had attended the nightlong party at Mr. Holle’s house, as had Jessica Snyder.

“When they actually mentioned what was going on, I thought it was a joke,” Mr. Holle added, referring to the plan to steal the Snyders’ safe. “I thought they were just playing around. I was just very naïve. Plus from being drinking that night, I just didn’t understand what was going on.”

    guilty as charged
