I'm completely new to webmastering, but i've realised i fell lucky on my domain name, which brought me to the front page this afternoon. Your domain name is one of the most important things, i've been told by an expert AND to get yourself a link on the top site in your category.

I meant a link to one of the most popular websites in your category, not search engine's, (like yahoo or google). Find the most popular and see if you can link to each other's site, i'm told it is another top way to get to the front page or near it.

Also, your tags are important. Each topic (thread, post) you have on your site, should have one/two word tags with relevant words to that particular post. For instance, my site is paranormal and in one of the posts, 'Ouija boards', I have the tags, 'seance, ouija, ouija boards, possession,. Your tags should be seperated by commas. Also, think of words that viewers would type in to find a site. Alot of people who come to my site, type in, 'ghost stories', or 'ghost tales'. Give me your URL and i'll help you here, if you don't already know this.

Back to my site, if you type in true ghost tales in the 'web search' bar (not google bar), i come up on the first page, but in google, i think it's top of the fourth page. However, the other day, I was also on top page of google for a few hours, then went back as i think the other sites must have done something, to get back in front of me. How they did that i don't know, does anyone have any knowledge of this.

My site is: World Mysteries and True Ghost Tales

I'm still working on the layout and design though with someone who is helping me. I don't know how to get a background colour up there though. Can anyone help me out on that? In foolproof language please , still getting my head around all the computer jargon.

UKhun added 10 Minutes and 17 Seconds later...

Just looked and i've slipped back even further on google to page nine, i think this might have something to do with my 'tagline' (slightly different from the tags i mentioned above). Just going to sort it out.

I did type out my URL in the message above this, but it changed to just the name as i posted it. Anyway, it has .com at the end.

UKhun added 0 Minutes and 49 Seconds later...

...and is all lower case letters.

Erm, why do you want extra traffic from Yahoo!?
Most of us here are getting 95+% SE traffic from G, so that's where I'd focus.

I've found focusing on gaining SERP rankings in Google flows over into Yahoo. But the reason you may not be getting traffic from Yahoo is because people just aren't searching for the terms you are ranking for.

I have a few sites that rank #1 and #2 for HUGE search terms in Google and I have the same placement on Yahoo and MSN, but with dinky traffic. I think it's because not enough people use those 'other' search engines as much and because Yahoo and MSN have way too obtrusive advertising. Meaning, there may be more searches for your keywords, but those searching are clicking on ads instead of SERPs.

Never gotten much traffic at all from Yahoo, it's simply nowhere near as popular for search as Google is. Additionally, most tech savvy users are Google users so anything tech/Web related or involving more sophisticated Internet users tends to be Google focused anyway.

I've actually found that what little traffic I get from yahoo and MSN converts better than Google. I thrive on the less sophisticated buying from the first website they come to.

On one particular website I own I have received 17414 visits from SEs so far for February. 10,134 from Google (plus 3,921 from Google images) and 2,237 from Yahoo - not too bad for just over 5 days.

While Yahoo doesn't send as many folks as Google they definitely contribute a great deal.

Interesting... my customers are mostly Webmasters and Google is pretty much king with this crowd. Still there are plenty of noobs and people getting involved with running Web sites for the first time.

Now do you think the lack of sophistication makes for a higher rate of post-sale problems/support/etc? I'm sure this depends a lot on the product/service being offered. Initially it seemed that less tech-savvy folks would have more problems with digital products and services, but even the most sophisticated user can still be a nightmare; especially when they think they know everything already.

Many years ago I handled chargebacks for a call center that sold products on radio/TV - mostly impulse buyers. They would often get their credit card bill and immediately file a dispute/chargeback just because they knew it was a dumb purchase. Seems those quick to drop a dime are also just as quick to try and get it back!

Pretty nice stats to begin with. I haven't had that kind of search traffic since I ran proxy sites a few years ago. Your's is definitely a higher margin of Yahoo traffic than I see on any of my sites. For most of my domains Yahoo is around 1-2% of search engine referrals, whereas it looks like your seeing around 18% Yahoo (not counting Google image search).

Not to get too OT - but do you handle image search any differently? I know at least one person who gets very nice traffic from google image search and converts it to "real" pageviews (not sure exactly what they're doing, 301 I guess).

I just looked at stats for some of my other sites and Yahoo search usually runs anywhere from 5% to 10% on most my sites.

Nah, I dont do anything special with the image search - however that is an interesting idea.

Being indexed on the SEs, doesn't mean you will get tons of traffic? If that is the rhythm, then there would be no challenge at all...

Check your keywords. Analyze it. Then work HARD for it.

Yeah Google is 95% of SE traffic but why ignore that other 5%, especially if your userbase is more highly represented on Yahoo? If I were posting something more for older people or those who are less web-savvy, then I would work more on Yahoo (or even MSN since it's the default IE search engine) than Google.

So to answer the original poster's question - in my experience, Yahoo's algorithms place more emphasis on on-page optimization than links. Google is all about links but Yahoo seems to focus more on things you can more easily control. If you really want more hits from Yahoo, do more on-page optimization. This will also spill over a bit into your google results, of course.

Doing this process is continuous. I was wondering why you need to focus in yahoo. When we all know that Google is the number 1 SE. If I were you I'll optimize my site by what Google likes.

Not because your site is indexed by yahoo, it already mean that you can already have traffic from it. It needs your site to be ranked high first before it receive some traffic.

Yahoo optimization is totally different from Google, and now Yahoo is showing bing search results so no need of optimizing for Yahoo i think. First check how many keywords are on top of Yahoo, if Google gives 70 visitors for any keyword Yahoo will give about 10 to 20 visitors for same keyword, mean Google traffic is about 500 times more than Yahoo.

Since people are learning that Yahoo is just running Bing underneath, they are using it less & less

I hope for their sake they come up with some new angle on the interface to the content that brings their share back

Any thoughts on what they could do - ala the instant search and hover preview, what's next?
