    Default Meta Tag Considerations

Though most largest search engines do not 'spider' the keyword Meta Tags on your page, and in some cases ignore these completely, the use of Meta Tags on your page still serves an important purpose. There are literally hundreds, even thousands of smaller search engines scattered all across the Internet. Whilst the bigger engines tend to 'spider' whole pages instead and obtain their results from that, these smaller search engines don't have as much physical space to work with and must do things differently. It is in these particular engines you will find that Meta Tags are still very important.

Honestly speaking apart from top five search engines, smaller ones won't get you much traffic. Atmost one in ten thousands and mostly these small ones use records from top five only.

But still meta is a good strategy, for you never know when policy changes and when algorithms start using it, though not expected as of now.

Speaking of meta's I've found in the past a good tactic for me was to use meta's on my most important pages, subpages in most cases I would choose not to use them. Hard to explain but the se's appeared to like it that way, using the meta tags on the main pages when applicable, and indexing the subpages pretty good w/o the meta tags, getting the best of both worlds.

    What smaller search engines?

Small engines are no good if they don't deliver traffic to your website.

I was speaking of meta tags in general, the first post trails off from meta keywords to meta tags which of course includes meta descriptions.

Yes meta keywords for the most part are garbage, still put them in on certain things such as my automated shopping carts, etc.

Don't some search engines still rely on those meta tags? I guess just minor, insignificant engines?

Most do not look at meta keywords, just real tiny little ones you never heard of for the most part

so based on this info. I shouldn't worry too much about meta keywords - like in my thread here?

rather spiders comb for links/anchor text?

    Correct.
I'd still put meta keywords into your index page, or possibly main pages of your site. Don't over use them, I usually just plug a few of my top words into it and leave it at that.

Use a very similar method myself.

I still have the tags on subpages, but don't treat them with the same importance.
