Hi, tell me What is the difference between a Web directory (eg. Yahoo) and a Web search engine(eg. Google) !

There is a lot difference between search engines and directories. Search engines are use by most people whenever they want something on the internet. Results will be given automatically after a query has been done. Websites submitted here are indexed by so called bots. While in directories, visitors will do the searching manually by choosing the exact niche for the site. Unlike in search engines, submission on directories are being approved after a human review.

There is lot of difference between yahoo search engine and directory. Search engine will gives you the results of relevant websites according to user query. while in directory websites are added only by after the approval of moderator.

I would comapare a wed directory with something static and search engine is in contrary - something dynamic.

search engines crawl your pages and index them.
a web directory tou have to manually add links.

Web directories have the links in their database present in categories, a plain search engine just displays a search field and gives results.

What do I win?

Yahoo is not a web directory. It is also a search engine like Google.

Every Search engine has also its own directory pages. The main page is SE.
